Please read below for more clarification: Your final paper will utilize your literature review to write a more theoretical piece. Specifically, you will be using your review and critique of the literature on a particular topic to advance theory, through the development of new ideas and hypotheses to test.

Please note this does not mean reviewing all potential theories of a particular topic. Instead, this could mean combining two theories you’ve come across in your literature review to create a new theory, refining a theory that already exists, analyzing a current theory and critiquing it, or showing how one theory is better than another.

Please refer to the section on theoretical articles the 7th edition APA manual for specific guidelines. Again, you are to follow formatting guidelines of the 6th edition APA manual.

This paper should be 12-15 pages long (not including title page, abstract, and references)

It should include at least 15 references (at least ten new references beyond what you used for the literature review). Abstract should be 250 words

Unlike the awesome and cool edgelords that will probably load there answer with sick burns that totally DESTROY stupid liberals who think there are 2048 genders, I’m going to answer honestly.

My answer is I don’t really know. It’s hard to really tell what the origins of gender roles are because, even though they have changed over the years and they look different from culture to culture, some variation of gender roles have existed for as long as we have historical data. Can we say definitively that they emerged for economic reasons? Probably not.

But I think a more relevant question would be: are gender roles sustained for purely economic reasons. My opinion on this is that there are economic factors in play but there are also social factors in play.

For example, one traditional gender role is that women should be housewives. If we destroy this harmful gender role and allow women to decide for themselves. Then we can expect more women in fields like engineering or the medical sciences. Fields that have been traditionally male dominate. If more women enter these fields. Men will have a harder time finding jobs and they may have to accept a lower salary due to the increase in competition.

I think some men see this and so they combat this transition in order to protect what they view as their economic well being.

(Of course they don’t look at the benefit of having a larger workforce but that’s an issue for another day).

This would be an example of an economic factor sustaining gender roles.

I actually think this is a more powerful factor, there are also a lot of men who feel that they need to be more powerful than their wives. An example of something these men would say is “a true man ought to be the breadwinner in the household.”

This belief leads a lot of men to feel disempowered by the idea of their wife making as much or more money than they are. In this scenario, a man could be completely well off economically. Additionally, they would still feel disempowered because they feel like they aren’t living up to their traditional view of what a man is. This would lead some men to oppose women entering the workforce for reasons that are not at all economic.
